Unemployment benefits in Slovakia: Eligibility, payments and duration
This article was created with artificial intelligence support.
Check which unemployment scheme covers you, whether you qualify and when payments can begin. Once the authority confirms the amount, compare it with your monthly household costs.
Identify the scheme and its coverage
Insurance benefits may depend on past contributions, means-tested assistance on household income or assets, and discretionary support on an individual assessment. Find the relevant programme before estimating a payment.
The local rules below explain which employees and regions they cover. Check the conditions for residence, self-employment or work abroad where they apply. Paying unemployment contributions alone does not establish eligibility for every benefit.
Rules and programmes in Slovakia
Dávka v nezamestnanosti · Sociálna poisťovňa (zákon č. 461/2003 Z. z., §§ 104–108)
People registered as jobseekers at the labour office from 1 January 2026 with compulsory unemployment insurance. Claims that arose before 2026 keep the previous flat 50% rate.
- Contribution record
2 years in the last 4
At least two years (730 days) of unemployment insurance in the four years before registration as a jobseeker; how the job ended does not affect eligibility.
- Replacement rate
50% → 40% → 30% → 20%
Of the daily assessment base from insured earnings in the previous two years: 50% for months one to three, then 40%, 30% and 20% in months four, five and six.
- Duration and cap
6 months; max €1,651.10
Maximum for a 31-day month at the 50% rate on claims arising from 1 July 2026 (€1,553.30 for claims from 1 January to 30 June 2026).

Check qualifying work and why the job ended
Collect your employment dates, contribution record and evidence of how employment ended. A qualifying period can use a specific look-back window, so total years worked may not answer the eligibility question.
Ask how resignation, misconduct, a termination agreement or redundancy affects your claim. Distinguish a waiting period from a refusal of entitlement. Check registration and job-search obligations even if you expect an employer payment first.
Plan the transition from salary to support
Start with a confirmed entitlement under Dávka v nezamestnanosti · Sociálna poisťovňa (zákon č. 461/2003 Z. z., §§ 104–108). Record the final salary, one-off payments and recurring support separately. Wait for the authority to approve the amount before relying on an estimate.
Example assumptions
Use these cases to organise your documents and decide what to check. Confirm benefit eligibility, dismissal rights and severance for your own situation.
The salary calculator estimates employment income. Entering a benefit as salary would apply the wrong rules: benefit entitlement and its tax treatment must be checked separately.

Plan the monthly income gap
Enter confirmed amounts after deductions. Keep recurring income separate from savings and one-off payments. Leave an unknown amount blank; enter 0 when you have confirmed there is none.
Use a dot or comma for decimals, with up to two decimal places. Leave out thousands separators. · EUR
Enter all four confirmed amounts to calculate the income gap.
This budget uses fixed monthly income and costs and assumes you can use the whole reserve immediately. Payment delays, changing benefits, interest and extra costs can change how long it lasts. It does not calculate a legal entitlement.
An insured employee loses a job
A worker appears to meet the qualifying period for Dávka v nezamestnanosti · Sociálna poisťovňa (zákon č. 461/2003 Z. z., §§ 104–108). Establish the insured earnings base and cap before comparing expected support with the usual monthly salary.
Next step: Confirm entitlement and payment start, then calculate the monthly gap using the award amount.
Too few qualifying contributions
A recently hired worker loses employment before meeting the insurance conditions. The normal earnings-linked example may not apply, even if deductions appeared on the payslip.
Next step: Check assistance and other support separately; keep an unconfirmed amount out of the cash budget.
Support reduces or ends
A household can cover current costs but expects entitlement to expire. A one-off employer payment extends the reserve, without changing recurring benefit income.
Next step: Prepare both the current monthly budget and the budget after the change, with separate reserve funds.
Compare your monthly housing and household costs with the support that has been confirmed.
Estimate your usual take-home payFind the earnings base, rate and cap
Find the benefit calculation base: previous earnings, insured pay, a statutory daily amount or a household assessment. A percentage of a defined base is not necessarily that percentage of your last gross or net payslip.
Check floors, caps, dependant supplements and any reduction over time. Separate tax and contribution deductions from the headline entitlement. Use the relevant official calculation or award notice; the employment-income calculator does not model unemployment payments.
Record when payments start, change and end
Record the registration date, any waiting period, the first payable day and expected transfer dates. Contribution history or interruptions can shorten the period you receive support below the scheme maximum.
Prepare a second budget for when payments reduce or end, and check whether another scheme is available. Allow for time without income while the authority processes the claim.
Compare support with costs and insurance
List recurring housing, food, utilities, transport and health-cover costs. Subtract these from confirmed recurring support to find the monthly shortfall. Keep severance and savings as a reserve for that gap.
Check whether unemployment changes health coverage, pension credits or other household support. The rules and your household circumstances determine these entitlements; entering zero earnings in the salary calculator cannot establish them.
Apply through the responsible authority
Prepare identification, employment history, termination documents, bank details and any household information the scheme requests. Use the official application route below and keep proof of submission and subsequent requests.
If a decision differs from your expectation, read the reasons and review procedure. Note its deadline and continue any registration or reporting obligations while seeking clarification. Cross-border workers should verify which country is responsible before using a domestic estimate.
Before relying on an unemployment amount
- Identify the scheme, qualifying period and reason-for-leaving rules.
- Check the calculation base, cap and actual deductions.
- Record registration, payment-start and end dates.
- Compare confirmed recurring support with costs; keep savings and severance separate.
