Part-time work: How does take-home pay change? (Czech Republic)
Why net pay usually falls less than gross pay
Income tax rises with income, so the slice of salary you give up when you cut your hours was taxed at your highest rate. Tax therefore falls faster than the gross salary, and net pay falls more slowly. How much depends on where your salary sits in the tax brackets: with a flat tax and no allowance, net pay falls in step with the hours. Above a contribution ceiling it can work the other way, because contributions that were capped at full time apply to all of the part-time salary.
Small salaries have their own thresholds
At low salaries, many countries change the rules: an allowance covers more of the pay, a reduced contribution rate applies, or a credit for low earners starts. A part-time salary can cross such a threshold, so its net pay can be a larger share of full time than the hours alone suggest, or, where a benefit ends, a smaller one. The calculator applies the thresholds it models for each country.
What net pay does not show
Pension entitlements, sick pay, parental benefits and unemployment benefits usually follow your earnings, so they shrink with a part-time salary too. Paid holiday usually follows your working days. Check these with your pension and benefit statements, and agree the new hours, salary and holiday in writing before you change your contract.
