How much gross salary for SGD 3,000 net a month? (Singapore)
Why you cannot simply add the tax rate
The step from net to gross is not a fixed percentage. Each extra unit of gross pay is taxed at your marginal rate, which is higher than your average rate, so the gap between net and gross grows faster than the target. Above a contribution ceiling it works the other way, and more of each extra unit reaches net pay. The calculator therefore searches for the gross salary under the full rules instead of multiplying the net amount by a factor.
A month or a year
A month here is a twelfth of the year. Where salaries are paid in 13 or 14 instalments, or a holiday or Christmas payment is taxed separately, a single payslip can differ from that twelfth. If you are paid that way, compare yearly figures: enter the net pay you want for the whole year.
When more gross pay leaves less net pay
In some countries, net pay falls when gross pay crosses a threshold: a contribution starts on the whole salary, or an allowance or a credit stops. Just above such a threshold, a higher salary can leave less net pay than one just below it. The calculator gives the lowest gross salary that reaches your target and warns you when a slightly higher salary would fall short again.
